Resurrected Clones of Great Leaders and Thinkers

Describe your idea

With a chat bot technology that learns to mimic an individual through exposure to the individual's prior communications, great leaders and thinkers could be commemorated with AI, or "channeled" to provide input on current events and problems.

Keep in mind at heart of these devices are AIs that will behave as programed. Everyone wants to claim the founding fathers and great minds. These things can be powerful communicators, but they might be merely puppets. If people don’t find them persuasive, it could be incredibly offensive.

What makes this idea new or different?

This bridges history, politics, and technology into a type of idolatry for the new millennium.

What will be the implications of this idea?

People will use AI as a tool in constitutional law, complex problem solving, or any other situation where people tend to make claims about what a deceased great leader or thinker would have done or intended. The chat bots will be consulted like oracles by some individuals and institutions. The opinions generated by the bots could be radically at odds with current social mores and could cause revisionist views on those historical figures.

There has always been a debate about what may have led to any particular individual developing "genius" capability. Is it "Nature" or "Nurture"? (I guess that was one reason that Albert Einstein's brain was removed from his body for study after his death.) We may be able to obtain the DNA of former great leaders and thinkers. But growing an identical clone of a great person from the past will almost surely NOT result in another great leader or thinker, unless we can recreate the conditions and stimuli under which the individual grew to maturity. How would we know in advance how this clone would think and act? For all we know, the clone might grow to resent us and turn its genius against our cause.

"Be Right Back" is the first episode of the second series of British science fiction anthology series Black Mirror. By using all of his past online communications and social media profiles, a new "Ash" can be created virtually. After starting out with instant messaging, Martha uploads videos and photos of Ash to the service's database, so that it can duplicate Ash's voice to talk to Martha over the phone. Martha allows herself to believe that she is talking to her dead partner, and over the following weeks she talks to the artificial Ash almost non-stop.

I totally agree that the conditions matter, whatever the nature/nurture calculus may be. But given the frequency with which current thinkers speculate and assert that X, Y, or Z great leader intended A, B, C, etc., I suspect that people will attempt to use chat bot technology, if not genetic capabilities, to simulate an interactive surrogate of past leaders. Some of this is going to be recreational or spiritual a la WWJD.

I agree and think that people will program these to support their own perspective. They will absolutely be used as puppet oracular tokens.
