Emerging technologies in the area of soft robotics, for instance large force soft actuation and advances in flexible and hybrid electronics for wearable sensing, enable near term adoption of wearable soft robotic components such as an autonomous tourniquet. Such a device would be worn on all major appendages, and be conformal and comfortable. It would sense a large drop in blood pressure associated with sever injury, and autonomously contract to restrict blood loss.Add Improvement
Although not the classic conception of a robot, the autonomous tourniquet has all the components - the ability to sense its environment, the ability to make decisions about its environment, and the ability to react to its environment. It is feasible with today's technology. This life saving technology would help ease the adoption and trust of wearables robotics among U.S. Soldiers.Add Improvement
U.S. Forces wear tourniquets on major appendages when going into situations where injury is likely. When a massive injury is experienced sometimes there is not enough time to react and get the tourniquet on before blood loss results in a fatality. Even in the case of pre-worn tourniquets sometimes the individual loses consciousness and/or their comrades are unable to pull it in time. An autonomous tourniquet would save lives in these situations.
